to the Illuminating Web

This site is migrating to a new template. You may notice a change in appearance when following some on site links.

This site is dedicated to experimental web design and using open standards and innovative approaches. The conventional business approach to web sites focuses on outsourcing, repurposing content, and the use of high priced and often overly specialized content management systems.

The Illuminating Web advocates a simpler home grown model for site development and maintenance. The technology to create a content and media rich web site exists, and there are open source solutions that could easily develop into viable alternatives. The articles and projects found here work towards these goals illustrating the path to more open content and media. The reference section provides links to all manner of resources for learning about and harnessing the technologies that make it possible.
