Spring 2005 Work Projects

2004 was a crazy year, and this year it probably going to be just as hectic. I am taking a Database course this semester, but still feel very strongly about harnessing XML when it makes sense. The last year as seen a lot of big changes on the web. Mozilla/Firefox is starting to cut in on IE's usage, and the trend will likely continue until the next major version of IE comes out.

CSS is now more or less a reality. Some layouts are still problematic, but the foundation is there and support for the standard is only going to ge better from here. RSS is also going to be a big factor in the development for this year.

I have a presentation in March, so the project relating to that is the major project for February. Part of the semester will be spend working on scripts to do a wide variety of things with RSS, image generation, and XML data manipulation. I will also be doing more template design.

On Demand Accessibility

This is the topic for my presentation for the TLT Conference. It ties together aspects of content management and interactive content to deliver a learning resource and tool for web accessibility.

Revisit the Departments and Administration Pages

Both of these sites need a major overhaul and I will be redesigning the sites and improving their functionality.

Course Templates

I will be exploring options to deploy a template solution for course content in a more focused and powerful manner than the current ENGR Template. Ideally the solution will be flexible and be usable with either Contribute or CourseGeine.

Harnessing RSS

In addition to writing a script to make RSS feeds from TC I would like to some up with a way to stream RSS feed information into TC for an open exchange of information.

engrForm 1.5

As time allows towards the end of the semester I would like to add functionality to engrForm. There is a long wish list of features I would like to add to the app, but I think that DB and XML support are on the top. A centrally managed form solution is another possibility.

Secure Writer 0.5

Though there are no known issues with the secure file writer scripts, I would like to take another stab at this script and prepare for a "master" output script to replace the Log/Mail/File output scripts I currently use with ENGR and EOS sites.

Site Indexing

Another script on my wish list is an improved site indexer.

XATL/Ollin

Since XML will be a big part of the future web strategy here in the college I would like to work on my parser and language for converting program data in XML and back. I would like to also write a more all inclusive language for other formats like information in databases, but that will likely be a much later project.

Web Solution Suite

To better serve the college in an IT fashion, I am continually developing a solution suite that works with ITECS System's server infrastructure, and incorporates recommended software packages (Macromedia Software, Campus Licensed Software, and Open Source Software). I envision this solution suite as a collection of open source web applications, web available resources, and specific consultation and production services that, when combined with the recommended software packages, form a complete web solution for key college functions.

This single, all encompassing goal is my main focus. This project is important because it defines how we serve the college in every aspect.
