Fall 2003 Projects, Revised Sep. 30, 2003

Completed or Ongoing Projects:

Web Solution Suite

To better serve the college in an IT fashion, we have developed and are continuing to develop a solution suite that works with ITECS System's server infrastructure, and recommended software packages (Macromedia Software, Campus Licensed Software, and Open Source Software). We envision this solution suite as a collection of open source web applications, web available resources, and specific consultation and production services that, when combined with the recommended software packages, form a complete web solution for key college functions.

This single, all encompassing goal is my main focus. This project is important because it defines how we serve the college in every aspect.

Some existing pieces already in place developed or finished in the Summer of 2003 are:

  • The ENGR Template for Macromedia Dreamweaver MX, Contribute, and Text Editors
    • Dreamweaver HTML Templates
    • Fireworks Graphics Templates
    • Addresses Accessibility Concerns
    • Webtop Image Gallery
    • Documentation
    • OSI Compliant (Open Sourced)
  • Consultation/Production for Academic and Administrative Departments

IMSE Web Site

Progress with this site was slow or nonexistent over the summer. We still hope to work with the department provided grad student to get this project finished in the fall.

OR Web Site

Thanks to Amy Craig's work, this site was successfully migrated and we are working on finishing touches to get the site up and running.

Graduate Student Central

This site is relatively small and should be ready to go live soon as a replacement for the old grad student pages. Minor Content issues are all that remain.

Research Web Site

This page has a little more content and more ambitious development than the Graduate Student Pages. We believe we have the technology in place to accommodate their needs. Development of this site will begin after Graduate Student Central goes live.

Late Fall Projects:

Engineering Central Web Site

This focal page for the college will be an intranet style page for Staff and Faculty. Some pieces for this site will be in place when it goes live, but we expect limited functionality until sometime in the Spring. It will still serve a greater utility that it currently does, even without the full functionality we envision.

Planned Spring Projects:

College Main Page and Accessory Pages

The Undergraduate, Graduate, and Research pages comprise a major underpinning of the College Web Site. The remaining sections under our auspice are the Admin/Services Directory  and Departments. About the College/Overview, and News are controlled by Engineering Communications. Sometime during the late fall or early spring we plan to begin development of a new college home page. If completed by July this will mean a three year life span for the current home page. Our goal is to harness the successful facets of the current design and the more uniform look/layout of the ENGR template to create an even more useful site.
