Baron: Pictures
1999
2000
-
My sister Yifaat visited in July 2000.
You can see pictures from the
Mammoth caves,
from "Land Between the Lakes" in Kentucky
(lakes or
flowers),
St. Louis,
and Chicago
(skyscrapers or
other things).
Finally, assorted pictures from her stay
can be seen here.
-
Pictures from a
barbecue that Jong arranged.
-
I had a short vacation in
Boston
(July 2000).
-
During the summer, I used my new camera to take pictures of
lots of people .
various structures
at the university, and its
natural
side as well (summer 2000).
-
During the fall semester, I had many opportunities
to take pictures.
Take a look at some interesting scenes of
college life,
people,
the Allerton conference,
the university,
and places outside
the campus (fall 2000).
-
My one-day excursion in
Brussels (December 2000).
-
My vacation in Israel.
I saw
people,
lots of flowers,
and we went to some
tourist attractions
(December 2000).
2001
-
The winter
was cold and leafless, a stark contrast to
my vacation.
Around February, the snow
melted,
and then, all of a sudden,
spring
began (December 2000-March 2001).
-
Nearing the end of the semester, I paid a visit to
Opher and Iris in
Boston
We also managed to spend an afternoon in
New Hampshire
(April 2001).
-
I had to see the
floods
of the Mississippi river (May 2001).
-
I drove to the
ISIT conference in Washington, DC, for enhanced scenery.
You can see pictures of
West Virginia,
Virginia,
the attractions
of Washington itself, some
miscellaneous
DC shots, and the battlefielf of
Gettysburg.
-
On the fourth of July, I went with Suraj to
Wisconsin and Chicago
(July 2001).
-
In late July, our family went on a three week vacation.
We left Illinois, drove northwest through Wisconsin
and Minnesota, visited
South Dakota,
continued to the
black hills region,
and visited
Wyoming
(Yellowstone and Grand Teton parks).
After a brief stay in
Idaho
(Craters of the Moon monument),
we drove through
Utah
to Nevada,
where we visited Las Vegas and the Hoover Dam.
We returned to
Utah
(Zion National park), drove south to
Arizona
(Grand Canyon)
and returned to
Utah,
where we visited Bryce, Capitol Reef, Arches,
and Canyonlands National Parks, and much more!
On our way home, we drove through a nice mountain
pass in
Colorado
(July-August 2001).
2002
-
My mother was on sabbatical at the University of Pennsylvania
up to February 2002. As a consequence, we were in
New York twice.
-
I also took several
pictures
during the winter.
-
During the spring and summer months, I talked my
office-mate Ashvin and his room-mate Prasad into
joining me for a series of excursions.
This habit of ours eventually became known as
"the weekly road-trip".
Destinations included
Starved Rock state park (IL),
Turkey Run state park (IN),
the Wisconsin Dells,
Wyandotte caves (IN),
and random minor excursions in
central Illinois.
-
In August, my parents and I went on a two week excursion
around the Great Lakes.
We mainly visited
Wisconsin,
Minnesota,
and Michigan.
-
In November, I traveled to
California,
where I saw friends, toured a bit, and gave a talk
at Berkeley.
2003
-
The winter was too busy. I defended my Ph.D.,
deposited the dissertation, traveled to a conference
in Baltimore, interviewed at an amusing university,
and submitted two paper revisions and two new
journal papers. Overall, lack of sleep was the
main theme. A few pictures can be seen
here.
-
The first interesting activity during the spring
was a road-trip that Armin and I took down south.
Unfortunately, it is impossible to reconstruct
the many philosophical discussions, fabulous meals,
the humming of Pilot Armin's propellors,
and immitations of certain southern gentlemen :)
However, there are some
pictures,
and I attempt to reconstruct some of the folklore
on that webpage!
-
In late May, I went to
California
for several days. My visit to
Yosemite
was spectacular!
-
Some Illinois pictures (including several interesting
individuals) appear
here.
-
Master Armin went on a brief summer day-trip to
Wisconsin.
-
After we had warmed up on these secondary excursions, Armin and
I decided that we wanted to partake in truly compelling adventure.
We set out on a Grand Western Tour, and drove west through
Iowa and
Nebraska.
Our goal all along had primarily been to enjoy Colorado,
and we began with a morning walk in
Denver
followed by a drive up
Pikes Peak.
The next day, we visited
Great Sand Dunes
National Park, followed by encounters with cliff dwellings at
Mesa Verde.
Truly awe-inspiring views awaited us at the
Black Canyon of the Gunnison,
whose sheer walls and deep canyon are magnificent (the photos absolutely
do not do them justice). The following day we headed to the
Colorado National Monument,
where the oppressive heat prevented us from completing a perhaps
ambitious trail. Needing to recover from dehydration, we continued to
Arches National Park.
The highlight of the vacation was our climb in
Rocky Mountain National Park.
The return included a routine stop in the
Wyoming capitol.
Little did we know that a "pilot pirate" friend of Armin would
harass us 2 hours later in Nebraska. But I kept the camera shuttered.

A brief vacation in
Israel in December.
